  21. By unit sales or marketshare perhaps, but they lost a truckload of
  22. money.  Apple has the problem that when they increase market share, they
  23. lose money, and when they make money, they lose marketshare.  You can't
  24. be successful in the industry by giving money away.  It is no secret in
  25. the industry that Apple's in trouble (trouble which runs much deeper
  26. than just losing some money this quarter).

  28. I personally am not a Mac fan, but I sure hope Apple can pull up before
  29. its too late.  IMHO the industry is much better off if Apple is around.
  30. Having alternatives is a good thing, and if all the alternatives to
  31. Windows go away, we'll all be the poorer for it.

  33. Not to mention that Apple is by far in a way the largest PPC customer,
  34. and if that market goes away, so in time will PPC development, and
  35. perhaps even production.  This is why I believe a healthy Apple (I mean
  36. the entire Mac industry, not just Apple itself) is necessary for
  37. PowerAmigas.  Unless the major PPC vendors (Apple/Be/AT) can cooperate
  38. in some fashion by sharing development costs (ala the 68K emulator
  39. thing), none of them individually will stand a chance against the
  40. Intel/Windoze oligopoly.  And if all the alternatives go away, it will
  41. truely be a sad day for what was once the personal computing market.
